Reverse Thinking: The Secret to Getting What You Want

Chapter 36 of the Tao Te Ching: “What you wish to shrink, you must first stretch. What you wish to weaken, you must first strengthen. What you wish to destroy, you must first build up. What you wish to take, you must first give.”

This is Lao Tzus most astonishing reverse thinking. Ordinary logic says “to receive, you must take.” Lao Tzus logic says “to receive, you must give.”

Why? Because anything pushed to extreme inevitably reverses. If you want someone to fall through pride, first flatter them. If you want someone to fail through greed, first satisfy them.

But this is not manipulation—it is natural law. Those who truly understand apply this to self-cultivation: to receive respect, first give respect. To receive love, first give love. To receive wealth, first create value.

This is the deepest wisdom of “what you wish to take, you must first give”: All receiving begins with giving.
